"Tribute To Hoobastank" (01/25/2005) Rock & Pop Various Artists, TributizedTributee: Hoobastank. There's no mention made on Tribute to Hoobastank's packaging that it's in fact an instrumental album. But it is, and a tepid one at that. If you love it when a whiny electric guitar mimics the phrasing of 'Stank lead singer Doug Robb, then you'll soon be rocking out to replications of "Crawling in the Dark," "Reason," and "Out of Control." But if you're like most people, you'll just wonder why this was ever recorded. Even as chop-shop tribute records go, Tribute to Hoobastank is pretty weak. ~ Johnny Loftus It's debatable what makes this tribute to Hoobastank "very special." Most likely the extra verbiage is designed to separate Very Special Tribute to Hoobastank from the 2004 Tribute Sounds release Tribute to Hoobastank. Since the latter set is a bizarre, tepidly performed instrumental album, the studio band -- complete with vocalist -- on Very Special has a leg up. That said, their versions of 'Stank hits like "Reason," "Crawling in the Dark," and "Out of Control" are satisfactory at best. Fanatics might be curious enough to buy this, but the average high school band probably does these covers just as well. ~ Johnny Loftus
