"Memorial 1944-1969" (10/27/1992) Jazz Instrument Miller, Glenn, Bluebird RCA (USA)Before the CD era, this two-LP set was the definitive Glenn Miller greatest-hits package. All 30 selections were big sellers (there are no duds included) and none of Miller's most popular songs are missing. Programmed in chronological order, the music starts with "Moonlight Serenade" and continues up to "St. Louis Blues March" (which was actually from Miller's Army Air Force Band). Highlights include "Little Brown Jug," "In the Mood," "Pennsylvania Six-Five Thousand," "Anvil Chorus," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "A String of Pearls" and "Serenade in Blue"; in fact, every song here is a highlight. The CD reissue dates from 1991, and coincided with RCA/BMG's comprehensive remastering and reissue of the Miller library, which was fortunate -- though they didn't go back to the original metal parts (which had deteriorated since 1969) for this re-release, the producers were able to tweak the sound on the existing masters, with the result that the CD actually has a slightly crisper, closer sound than the LP edition. Coupled with some very judicious use of noise-reduction technology that wasn't available in when the LP version was released, the result is a richer, closer sound, and one of the few big-band CDs from RCA's early-'90s catalog that is still competitive for sound quality with their more recent 24-bit remasterings. It was also a good alternative at the time to The Complete Glenn Miller & His Orchestra 1938-1942 box, for those on a budget. ~ Scott Yanow & Bruce Eder
