eTrex Vista Hcx is well worth the money.
by Just some guy, Nov. 24, 2008 - Pros: Quick to aquire satellites. Good display. Small and easy to carry.
- Cons: Extra Maps are too expensive. Address format a little picky ( NW does not work, use N W for northwest street)
- Comments:
This is my first GPS, and so far I'm loving it. I did my research and checked what other people were saying about GPS units. Garmin has a good reputation, so I went with them. I was looking for a unit I could use bicycling, running, and as a means to find my way when traveling for work. The base unit is good, but it is much better when you add a micro SD card and load up a map. I purchased the North America Map and was able to load all of the maps onto the 2GB SD card. Having the map loaded allows you to see detail of the roads ridden when bicycling. Without the maps, you only have the most major roads and cities. So far the battery life is lasting as billed, and the unit is helping me with my winter running, by letting me know how far and how fast I've gone. I can hardly wait for summer to do some bicycling. ...

Quite happy
by Dumont, Aug. 5, 2008 - Pros: Excellent reception, good size, portability and display,
- Cons: Electric compass not so good
- Comments:
I bought the Etrex Vista HCX as an upgrade from my old Etrex Legend. It primarily is used for geocaching. For that use it's quite wonderful. No longer do I need to worry overly much about the sky being overcast, or forest canopy totally demolishing my signal. The two main reasons I purchased were the high sensitivity receiver and the electronic compass. The receiver works perfectly as advertised and is great. The compass on the other hand seems to require constant re-calibration to have a hope of being accurate. For my purposes the rest of the features that are added are great but unnecessary. The screen is bright and readable. The navigation and auto-routing with additional map data is admirable, if not as good as a dedicated driving GPS. The user interface is fair, but somewhat heavily nested and it would have helped to have better access to a printed manual. The manual is available online and does do a pretty good job of explaining use, if you can remember what it tol...

Portable Gear
by Online Shopper - Comments:
The fully-gasketed, waterproof, high-impact, plastic-alloy Garmin eTrex Vista feels as if it belongs in your hand. Although the eTrex Vista is compact, it has a solid, balanced feel that the other devices in our roundup lack. Apparently, the device's desi... - Read full review at pcmag.com
