Throughout the history of jazz the small ensemble has been the norm, though the big band, too, has enjoyed popularity with composers, arrangers, and featured soloists alike. The in-between size of The Jim Cifelli New York Nonet, though, produces the best of both worlds. Armed with challenging compositions, daring arrangements, and bursting at the seams with outstanding soloists, this group is all a modern jazz ensemble should be and more. The technical and musical prowess of all the links in Cifelli's chain never falters. Memories of Miles Davis's "Birth Of The Cool" days, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Band and Bob Mintzer's groups are relived upon first listening. Drawing from a myriad of influences, Cifelli has constructed a set of mostly originals with a few rearranged standards which take the listener on a sonic journey. Our quick departure on the Coltrane-inspired "Bullet Trane" leads through a lightly swinging "Dolphin Dance" and, later, a jaunt through Latin regions with "Ladybird" and "Resurgence." Along the way we are in the constant company of thoughtfully composed ensemble passages and adept-yet-concise solo work. Finally, our trip comes to an end with the richly reflective "Far And Near" to let us know just how great a distance we've come. BULLET TRANE offers a ride that can be taken many times.
